Competency Assessment

At Drug Consultants, Inc., the competency and quality of our healthcare professionals is of paramount importance. That's why we go to great lengths to conduct a thorough competency assessment of each of professionals we place. This process consists of three specific stages:

1. Initial Competency Evaluation
The initial stage of the competency evaluation determines the applicant's qualifications to work with us. This screening process verifies that the applicant meets the following standards:

  • Educational requirements meet his/her professional discipline
  • References of job-related work experience are verified
  • Is in possession of licensure/certification requirements for the position and/or state
  • Has necessary specialty certifications
  • Completion of a self-evaluation skills checklist pertinent to the specialty
  • No disciplinary action has been taken against the candidate
  • Has proof of eligibility to legally work in the United States

2. Orientation Evaluation
During the orientation stage the applicant must complete written tests, provided by Drug Consultants, which evaluate the candidate's knowledge of key competencies, such as:

  • Abuse and neglect
  • Blood borne pathogens and infectious diseases
  • Restraints
  • Patient confidentiality
  • Pain management
  • Patient safety
  • Medication administration and safety
  • Other pertinent information required by JCAHO, OSHA andother regulations/organizations

3. Continuous Evaluation
The final stage of competency assessment consists of the applicant's performance as it relates to the job requirements and the unit-specific job description provided by the client facility. Continuous evaluation assesses the following areas:

  • Communication, confidentiality, customer service
  • Adaptability, flexibility
  • Teamwork, cooperation
  • Reliability, attendance
  • Initiative, enthusiasm
  • Professionalism, continuing education

Continuing competency is assessed through a review of client evaluations, Drug Consultants traveler audits and continuing education. When appropriate, we also conduct interviews with nurse managers who work with our healthcare professionals.
